The much-loved Waltz Inn in the Village of Waltz, one of the three villages located in Huron Charter Township, on Monday announced they are permanently closing.
A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page read:
“After much thought & consideration, we will not be reopening the Waltz Inn. “
The spot, known for its fish and chips and yellow perch, is a house on the corner of Waltz Road and Mineral Springs Road.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the restaurant closed its doors, according to the Huron Hub.
The owners for the past 37 years expressed thanks and appreciation to their customers.
Nearly 200 comments are on the post with many saying they are sad to see the restaurant not reopen and others thanking them for the memories.
Lorraine Rates of Brownstown, and formerly of New Boston, lived nearby the Waltz Inn and went there often.
“It was always fresh and really homemade,” Rates said. “It was just good. The atmosphere was good. It was small and intimate.”
Rates visited the restaurant with friends and family for its encrusted fish and chicken dishes. She is sad to see them close.
“Especially if it’s from COVID,” Rates said. “It was a local eatery and my daughter texted me saying ‘it’s a bummer.'”
The restaurant was established in 1900, according to an October 2019 menu posted on Facebook. The restaurant was a former farmhouse purchased by Joseph Waltz Sr. Formerly a tavern and brewery, the house was transformed by the the current owners to the 84-seat Waltz Inn, opening in 1984.
The Waltz Inn was also noted for being haunted. According to the menu, the story is that the ghost is of former owner Tom Monastersky , who managed the place until the early 1980s. Monsterky and his wife, Olga, died within two weeks of each other in the same upstairs bedroom.
“That’s when the building took on a life of its own,” according to the menu.
The new owners, listed as Kathy and Lanny Fox, wrote of “strange occurrences” happening including closed doors found open and furniture rearranged. Sightings of Monastersky were also reported.
The Foxes did not respond to a request for comment.
