Martin Roberts found himself playing hide and seek with the spirit of a child in a haunting new series.
The Homes Under The Hammer presenter was turned to dark arts specialist Ian Lawman, paranormal researcher and historian Jayne Harris, and investigator Barri Ghai after sensing activity in his 400-year-old farmhouse.
In scenes filmed for discovery+ show Celebrity Help! My House Is Haunted, he said: ‘This is the oldest property I have ever owned, just 1652 when it was built. This house has lived through so much history.
‘I would say the house definitely has energy; I’m pretty convinced that there is a spirit here, but hopefully it knows that I’m its friend.’
His building first experienced paranormal activity at the property while staying their during its renovation, and medium Ian immediately sensed the presence of spirits as he walked through the door, referring to a ‘large lady’ and a young boy who wanted to play, while another was ‘coughing up blood’.
It turns out the Edwards family had owned the house and passed it down through generations, with a lady called Margaret – who died at the property – being the last custodian in the mid-19th century.
The investigation saw Martin tasked with triggering some activity, which saw him given an SLS camera as he tried to see one of the spirits.
The camera showed a reading of a small child-like stick figure in the corner of the corridor, and Martin quipped: ‘This is like hide and seek though, isn’t it? This is hide and seek, you’re not going to give yourself up that easily, are you?’
While Martin headed home, the team stayed behind to continue their investigation over night, and it turned out a GPS message when they came across the ‘grey later’ led them to Margaret Street – her namesake – while they later captured her on camera.
They laid the evidence – including ‘audio’ of a spirit confirming her name and the spooky photograph – in front of Robert, who was amazed.
‘That’s your grey lady,’ Ian said, explaining that with no malevolent spirits attached to the property, the team felt no need to cleanse the house. ‘So, Margaret Edwards, we felt, she was quite happy in your house.
‘And then the two children we felt also were here because they’d passed in such a sad passing, so they were trapped here as well.’
Robert told them: ‘Guess what my mum’s name is, or was? Margaret. She died about 20 years ago. Yeah, you didn’t know that.’
